"Macho"/Dominance

Prevalent in South America in modern times, Dominance/"Macho" is one of the major types of honor/shame cultures. Often referred to as "machismo", honor and reverence in this context is reserved for those men who can publicly demonstrate strength, dominance, and authority. Those who are unwilling to be dominant are often perceived as shameful and less worthy of honor from the group/family. 

Often criticized as a form of hyper-masculinity/patriarchy, it nonetheless encompasses more positive aspects as well; such as being a provider and protector of the home/family. The very display, however, of strength is often considered the cultural "proof" of being worthy of honor, and those who look weak are often considered shameful. In this context, the pressure to "man up" is immense.
